Help Your Toddler Get Ready to Read
By: Jennifer Hale
Many three year olds are able to learn not only the name of letters but also their sounds. It is definitely not too early to begin to get your toddler ready to read. Remember, keep it fun to spark your child's interest and you can pave their way to literary success.
Here are some ways to help your child get ready to read during the ages of 2 and 3:
- Read with your child every day, even if only for a few minutes.
- Encourage your child to pick out their favorite book for you to read
- Point to pictures and name them out loud, encouraging your child to do the same while you read
- Watch to see if your child makes eye contact with you when you read alound. That will tell you if she is paying attention to you and the story.
- Talk with your child throughout the day about the things you are doing and relate them to a book you have read to them.
