Read to Rover Programs
By: Jennifer Hale
Therapy dogs are being used in many libraries to help motivate young children to read. These reading programs offer a non-judgemental and stress free environment for children experiencing difficulty reading or anxieties about reading aloud. Studies show that the use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs often result in children who feel more comfortable reading aloud, improvement in their literacy skills, as well as a development for the love of reading.
In most programs the child may choose a book from the library he or she would like to read to the therapy dog or is able to bring a favorite from home. The child may then sit with the dog and the handler in a room or a quiet place in the library free from interruptions. The visits are generally short, but the impact can be tremendous which often encourages the child to return for more reading sessions.
Research shows that most children will experience some type of learning loss over summer vacation. However, studies also show that children who continue to read throughout the summer months can actually gain skills. So, why not sign your children up at the library for a Read to Rover program that is not just fun for your child but also educational.
