Best Dogs for Families with Children
By: Jennifer Hale

During the last few decades the number of injuries related to dog bites have been on the rise.   Parents face a tremendous decision when they decide to acquire a dog as a family pet, especially those with small children.

Millions of people every year are bitten by dogs.  According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 17% of the injuries require medical attention.  Statistics also show that the rate of injuries related to dog bites is high test for children ages 5 to 9 years.  This can be extremely discouraging for a family looking to acquire a dog as the family pet.

Larger breeds on average tend to be more patient and tolerant of children tugging or playing with them.  But the large breeds still pose a threat because of their size. Larger dogs tend to have big paws with strong nails that can easily scratch a child when playing.  A swift "whack" of their tail can knock a small toddler over, and a "thump" of a dog's large head can really hurt.  According to the CDC, the fatal and severe injuries that have occurred were from usually from the larger breeds.

Most smaller breeds have high activity levels and enjoy playing with children. However, small dogs can be  easily injured .  This can leave them feeling threatened with the need to defend themselves, causing them to nip. Even a bite from a small dog can be serious or leave the child with emotional trauma.

Parents are urged to do their homework prior to bringing a dog into the household.  Consult with local veterinarians, visit local libraries or bookstores, even talk to other families with dogs before making a purchase. Parents should consider the age and activity level of their own children when making this decision.

The top ten breeds deemed to be the best for families with children are:

1.  The Mutt - which generally has a well rounded disposition and has the least risk of illness.
2.  Beagle - smaller breed that is extremely playful but has a tendency to roam.
3.  Standard Poodle - easily trainable with an easily cared for coat.
4.  Golden Retriever - this breed loves everyone and is extremely patient with children.
5.  Labrador Retriever - loves to play outside and is usually very patient with children.
6.  Border Terrier - smaller in size but very active and playful.
7.  Great Dane - very large breed but gentle and patient.
8.  Pug - smaller breed that generally loves children and loves to play.
9.  New Foundland - very large breed but is gentle and loves children.
10. Samoyed - this breed is good natured and easily trained.

Even the gentlest of breeds can be violent if not given enough socialization and training.  A good practice is to not leave babies or small children alone with dogs, since it's impossible to predict whether or not a dog will react in an appropriate manner. In some households, possibly the best choice of a pet for a small child may be a stuffed toy animal.
