The Ultimate Baby FoodOne of the most important things we can do as mothers for our children is to provide them with the best nutrition possible right from the very start. Obviously one of the best things we can do would be to breast feed them provided this works in your situation, but after that there is a popular growing trend that is as old as time: making your own baby food.
Right now you are probably sitting there cringing thinking 'yeah right, like I have the time', but trust me, it is way worth it and not as difficult as it seems. Of course plucking jars off a grocery store shelf is quicker but are they really made with the freshest foods and how come they don't even come close to tasting like the fresh fruit or vegetables we eat. And the fact that they have such a long shelf life is truly scary. Actually it's extremely enjoyable knowing that you are doing the very best you can by choosing or growing the best (maybe even organic) foods for your baby, and guess what - it's baby food you actually don't mind tasting to make sure it's the right temperature. And the only additive is water to thin and puree your food.
There is a fabulous book called Super Baby Food written by Ruth Yaron that details absolutely everything you need to know about making your own food. It explains at what age you can start feeding your baby certain foods, how to select and cook the food as well as storing it. This book is invaluable to me and I used it for both of my children and still use it for the delicious recipes it has in it for toddlers. One of the most convenient methods that I found is to steam or cook the vegetable, puree it in the food processor and fill ice cube trays to freeze for a later date. You can also always keep the food processor handy when you make dinner to feed your baby what you are having as well since you should be eating healthy yourself to keep up your energy level for your little one. So, be creative, have a few friends over and have fun making food your babies will love, knowing that you are giving them the best there is to offer.
